Cebu, Philippines: Whale Sharks, History, and Unforgettable Water Adventures
“The sea is dangerous and its storms terrible, but these obstacles have never been sufficient reason to remain ashore.” Ferdinand Magellan

The Philippines is a country shaped by the sea, and nowhere did that feel more true to us than in Cebu. Warm waters, dramatic coastlines, and experiences you simply cannot replicate elsewhere make this part of the world unforgettable. Cebu offers a balance of comfort, culture, and adventure that works especially well when you choose the right home base and plan your days thoughtfully.
While in Cebu, we stayed at the Sheraton Cebu Mactan Resort. The location is beautiful, set right on the water, and the resort itself is impressive. The pools and grounds are expansive, the service is polished, and the overall atmosphere feels calm and well designed. For Marriott Bonvoy members, the benefits are noticeable and add real value. We also strongly recommend coordinating airport transportation directly through the Marriott. It may cost a few dollars more than arranging it on your own, but the professionalism, safety, and seamless experience are absolutely worth it, especially after a long international flight.
Beyond the resort, Cebu has a rich and fascinating history, and spending time in the downtown area adds important context to the island. One of the most significant stops is Cebu Metropolitan Cathedral, a large and elegant church that has played a central role in the city’s religious life for centuries. The cathedral has been rebuilt several times due to fires and earthquakes, but it remains a focal point of the city and a reminder of Cebu’s deep Catholic roots.
Just a short walk away is Magellan’s Cross, one of the most important historical landmarks in the Philippines. The cross is housed inside a small pavilion near the Basilica del Santo Niño and marks the arrival of Christianity in the country in 1521. Ferdinand Magellan planted the cross upon reaching Cebu as part of his expedition. While Magellan introduced Christianity to the islands, his story ends nearby. He was killed on the neighboring island of Mactan during a battle with local forces led by Lapu Lapu. Standing at the site of the cross adds weight to that history and helps connect the events that shaped the region.
Adjacent to the basilica is a small museum that provides additional insight into Cebu’s religious and cultural history. Inside, you will find artifacts, artwork, and displays related to the Basilica del Santo Niño and the early spread of Christianity in the Philippines. It is a worthwhile stop that helps tie together the significance of the cathedral, the cross, and Cebu’s role in the country’s past.
While Cebu’s history is compelling, the highlight of the island is without question swimming with whale sharks, followed closely by experiencing the famous sardine run. These are not quick or casual outings, and it is important to understand that when planning your day. From the Sheraton, the drive south to the whale shark area near Oslob is long and begins very early, with pickup typically between two and three in the morning. The roads wind along the southern coastline, and while the scenery is beautiful, the drive is slow and takes several hours. This is one experience where booking a private tour makes a noticeable difference. Being able to stretch out, avoid crowded buses, and move at your own pace makes the long day far more enjoyable.
Arriving in Oslob early helps keep the experience calm and organized. After checking in, you are provided with snorkel gear and a briefing on what to expect and how to interact responsibly in the water. Once you enter the ocean, the experience immediately lives up to expectations. Swimming with whale sharks is every bit as incredible as it sounds. These massive creatures glide slowly through the water with a grace that feels almost unreal. Despite their size, they are gentle and peaceful, and being alongside them is both thrilling and calming at the same time. It is one of those moments that stays with you long after the trip is over.
After the whale shark experience, the tour continues inland to Tumalog Falls. This stop offers a refreshing contrast to the early morning and time spent in the ocean. Tumalog Falls cascades down wide rock faces into shallow pools, with cool water and mist filling the air. It is a relaxing place to wade, cool off, or simply take in the scenery before continuing on.
The final stop of the day brings you to Moalboal for one of the most impressive underwater sights we have ever experienced. Just offshore, millions of sardines move together in massive, swirling formations. Swimming among them feels surreal, like being inside a living, moving cloud. Sea turtles are often seen in the same area, calmly passing through as if the spectacle around them is completely normal.
By the time you return to the resort, it has been a long day, but one filled with unforgettable moments. Cebu manages to combine history, culture, and natural wonders in a way that feels balanced rather than overwhelming.
Cebu delivered some of the most memorable experiences of our time in the Philippines. Between the comfort of the Sheraton, the depth of history in the city, and the once in a lifetime encounters in the water, it is a destination that truly stands out.
