Many visitors come to Cancun and never leave their resort. There is certainly nothing wrong with that. If your ideal vacation consists of relaxing by the pool, enjoying a few frozen cocktails, watching the sunset, and spending time with family, Cancun offers plenty of resorts where you can do exactly that.

For travelers who enjoy exploring beyond the resort, however, Cancun also serves as a gateway to some incredible experiences. From visiting Chichén Itzá, one of the New Seven Wonders of the World, to exploring the Mayan ruins of Tulum or El Meco, where visitors can still climb to the top of the main pyramid, there is no shortage of adventure. Add swimming in cenotes, snorkeling with sea turtles, and day trips to nearby islands, and you'll quickly discover that Cancun offers much more than beautiful beaches. We will be covering many of these experiences, along with our recommended tour companies, in future articles.

During our eight-week Cancun resort research project, Crystal and I spent two weeks at Dreams Sands Cancun Resort & Spa, a family-friendly Hyatt Inclusive Collection property located in the heart of Cancun's Hotel Zone.

The Beach That Put Dreams Sands on the Map

Dreams Sands is best known for its beach, and under normal conditions, it is easy to understand why.

The resort sits on a stretch of shoreline known for calm, clear water and soft white sand. Small rock formations just offshore add character to the scenery and create beautiful photo opportunities. Unlike many Cancun beaches that experience larger waves, the water here is typically calm enough for younger children and less experienced swimmers to enjoy comfortably.

One of the property's biggest advantages is that this section of Cancun generally experiences far less sargassum than many neighboring beaches.

Unfortunately, during our visit, Mother Nature had other plans.

We happened to arrive during one of the heaviest sargassum events the region had experienced in quite some time. Large amounts of seaweed washed ashore daily, making the beach far less enjoyable than visitors normally experience. The normally turquoise water became brown and murky, significantly impacting one of the resort's greatest strengths.

To be clear, this was not a resort issue. It was simply bad timing. Looking at photos from before and after our stay makes it easy to understand why this beach has earned such a strong reputation.

A Convenient Location in Cancun

Dreams Sands enjoys one of the best locations in Cancun's Hotel Zone. Guests are within walking distance of restaurants, shopping, nightlife, and several attractions.

The property itself is smaller than many of Cancun's mega resorts, which actually works to its advantage. We never felt like we were spending half the day walking between our room, the beach, restaurants, and the pool.

While the resort is beginning to show its age compared to some of Cancun's newer all-inclusive properties, its location remains one of its strongest selling points.

Food and Drinks

Food is often one of the most important factors when evaluating an all-inclusive resort.

Our experience at Dreams Sands was somewhat mixed. We genuinely enjoyed the buffet offerings, particularly at breakfast and lunch, but found the specialty restaurants lacked consistency from meal to meal.

To be fair, Dreams Sands competes at a lower price point than many of Cancun's luxury all-inclusive resorts. Expectations should be adjusted accordingly. We never went hungry and always found something enjoyable to eat, but relatively few meals left us saying, "Wow, they really nailed that one."

The exception was the World Café buffet.

Breakfast quickly became one of our favorite parts of the day. Along with traditional American breakfast favorites, the buffet featured freshly prepared local specialties. One of our favorite stations served handmade sopes topped with black beans, cheese, and other traditional ingredients. Fresh fruit, an omelet station, and an occasional crepe station rounded out one of the better breakfast buffets we experienced during our Cancun stay.

Lunch was equally enjoyable. The griddle station prepared fresh corn tortillas for made-to-order tacos with rotating meats and fresh salsas. The pasta station and grill also provided plenty of variety.

If you visit the World Café, ask to sit in Enrique's section. His service was exceptional throughout our stay. If you're celebrating a birthday, make sure Jorge knows. His powerful singing voice has a way of turning an ordinary birthday dinner into a memorable event.

Specialty Restaurants

We visited each of the specialty restaurants multiple times during our stay.

Our favorite was Himitsu, the resort's Asian restaurant. Along with the hibachi experience, we enjoyed the sushi selection and appetizers, particularly the gyoza and fish bao buns. Christian consistently provided outstanding service and helped make every visit enjoyable.

Gaucho Grill was the restaurant we anticipated most. As someone who rarely passes up a good steak, I ordered the ribeye every visit. While it was consistently prepared and seasoned well, the quality of the cut itself left something to be desired. It satisfied the craving, but never quite reached the level we were hoping for.

Portofino produced mixed results. The pizzas were excellent and appeared to come from a brick oven. The chicken parmesan and beef carpaccio were both enjoyable. Unfortunately, the scallops were memorable for all the wrong reasons. We're still not entirely convinced they were actually scallops.

Toward the end of our stay, El Patio grew on us considerably. Abraham provided outstanding service, and we discovered the steak fajitas quickly became our go-to meal. Consistently flavorful and well prepared, they helped improve our overall impression of the restaurant.

One consistent bright spot throughout the resort was Coco Café. Whether you needed a morning latte, an afternoon iced coffee, or one of their fresh chocolate croissants, it quickly became one of our favorite stops.

Fitness and Activities

For an all-inclusive resort, Dreams Sands offers a surprisingly well-equipped fitness center with an excellent selection of cardio equipment, machines, and free weights. Arriving early is recommended, however. The gym opens at 6:00 a.m. and fills quickly.

Guests can also participate in daily yoga and Pilates classes held on a platform overlooking the Caribbean Sea. The location alone makes these classes worth attending.

Pools and Recreation

Dreams Sands features several pools, including a Preferred Club pool reserved for upgraded guests.

One thing we consistently appreciated was the attentive pool service. Staff members were constantly circulating, taking drink orders and checking on guests. This level of service is something we have found lacking at many resorts, even those with significantly higher price tags.

If you're spending the day poolside, look for Ulisis. He mixes an excellent margarita and is always happy to share a great story.

The entertainment team also stays busy throughout the day with bracelet making, painting classes, guacamole demonstrations, paella cooking classes, and numerous family-friendly activities.

Evenings feature live music, themed entertainment, wine tastings, and a weekly fire show, ensuring there is always something happening after the sun goes down.

Service Matters

As is often the case, the people became our favorite part of the resort.

From Enrique and Jorge at the World Café, to Christian at Himitsu, Abraham at El Patio, and Ulisis around the pool, we encountered numerous employees who genuinely cared about creating a memorable experience for their guests.

Buildings can be renovated and menus can be updated, but genuine hospitality is much harder to teach. Dreams Sands has several team members who consistently demonstrate that hospitality every day.

Who Is This Resort Best For?

Dreams Sands is best suited for families looking for an affordable all-inclusive vacation in one of Cancun's best locations.

Parents with younger children will appreciate the calm beach, family-friendly atmosphere, numerous activities, and compact layout of the resort.

Travelers seeking modern luxury accommodations, cutting-edge design, or a culinary-focused vacation may prefer one of Cancun's newer, higher-end resorts.

Final Thoughts

Looking back on our two-week stay, our overall impression of Dreams Sands improved as the days went on.

The resort certainly has areas that could benefit from renovation, and greater consistency in the specialty restaurants would elevate the overall guest experience. Those are opportunities for improvement rather than deal breakers.

What remained consistently excellent throughout our stay were the people. The service, convenient location, family-friendly atmosphere, and outstanding value helped offset many of the property's shortcomings.

While Dreams Sands would not be our first recommendation for travelers seeking a luxury all-inclusive experience, we would have no hesitation recommending it to families looking for an affordable beachfront vacation in Cancun. For the right traveler and the right budget, Dreams Sands offers an enjoyable vacation backed by a team of employees who genuinely care about their guests.
