Sri Lanka Ayurveda and Yoga Retreats

"Yoga is not about touching your toes, it is what you learn on the way down," Jigar Gor

As Westerners increasingly seek out alternative medicine, Sri Lanka's ayurveda scene is blossoming. Whether you're in search of Ayurvedic remedies, treatments, or a chance to fully immerse yourself in the Ayurvedic lifestyle, Sri Lanka has it all. And alongside the traditional Ayurveda, yoga is seen as an integral part of the holistic journey. One place, in particular, stands out – Ulpotha.

I stumbled upon Ulpotha in a Google search, along with two other resorts, and left the decision to my friend Vicky. Much to my initial dismay, she chose Ulpotha. However, it quickly became one of my favorite spots in Sri Lanka. Offering daily yoga sessions, vegan meals, a taste of traditional living, and, of course, Ayurvedic treatments, Ulpotha is the ultimate retreat destination. Nestled in a serene jungle village, guests are free to tailor their experience to their liking. While the villagers attend to your needs, you can truly lose yourself in the "Ulpotha Experience." And despite my initial apprehension about the lack of electricity, after spending one week on my first trip and then two weeks on my second, I realized it's not so bad after all!

What truly sets Ulpotha apart is its people – both the staff and fellow guests. The retreat runs two-week sessions with instructors from around the world. Our trip coincided with instructor Mika, whose free-spirited approach to yoga won us over. And let's not forget Boris and Eva, the massage therapists whose unique styles perfectly complemented each other. Alongside yoga sessions, treatments, and communal meals, Ulpotha offers bikes for village excursions, a tranquil lake for swimming, mountain hikes, and guided visits to temples. Whether you're seeking adventure or serenity, Ulpotha has something for everyone. It's truly a judgment-free zone – so feel free to do as much or as little as your heart desires. Despite the occasional monkey stealing a coconut, it's a safe haven of peace and tranquility.
