Kota Kinabalu—often called “KK” by locals—is the gateway to Sabah, Malaysia, and a vibrant mix of markets, seaside promenades, and island escapes. For us, KK became more than just a stopover; it was a home base during our Borneo travels. With its convenient location, we could easily reach nearby islands, trek through national parks, and enjoy fresh seafood dinners at the waterfront.
KK’s central location also makes it an excellent hub for day trips—whether you’re heading to Kinabalu Park for cooler mountain air, exploring cultural and historical sites like the Sabah State Mosque, WW2 Museums, points along the Sandakan Death March, or hopping a ferry to Tunku Abdul Rahman Marine Park. The city has a relaxed coastal vibe but still offers modern conveniences like shopping malls, spas, and international dining options.
From bustling night markets filled with grilled seafood skewers to sunset drinks at rooftop bars, KK offers a little of everything. It’s the kind of place where you can spend a few days or a few weeks and still find new corners to explore. For us, it was also where we experienced one of our most memorable hotel stays in Southeast Asia.
Le Meridien Kota Kinabalu
After seven months traveling through Southeast Asia—covering seven countries, more than 210 nights, and 27 different Marriott properties—Le Meridien Kota Kinabalu stands out as the hotel with the most dedicated, professional, and visible management team we’ve ever encountered.
Our original 13-night booking quickly turned into 34 nights thanks to the outstanding service. Senior managers Mr. Suresh Ramasamy and Pavin Ravindran set the tone for the property, constantly engaging with guests at breakfast and ensuring smooth operations late into the evening in the lounge.
The front desk team—Reazie, Noava, Shirley, and Cedric—welcomed us warmly every time we returned. Breakfast here is a highlight, offering everything from local Malaysian dishes to Western favorites. Anna, Katie, Rodney, and Roger bring energy and warmth to the F&B team, led by Mr. Mohd Fadzil.
Rooms are spacious, well-kept, and fitted with the most comfortable beds we found in the region. TVs are large by hotel standards, and if you book a sea-view room, you’ll be treated to spectacular sunsets. For Marriott Bonvoy members with lounge access, expect exceptional food prepared by Chef Daniel and Chef Katy, and top-tier service from Laurian, Peter, Christina, Yuven, Regina, and Elvina.
The rooftop bar offers craft cocktails with sweeping sunset views—a must-visit. We also had the chance to join the Chef On The Go program, thanks to Chef Chua and Chef Awangku, which was a unique hands-on experience.
Le Meridien KK’s location is ideal: a short ride from the airport, walking distance to the pier, nightlife, restaurants, and shopping. The hotel can also arrange excursions to the city’s attractions or nearby islands.
For anyone visiting Kota Kinabalu—whether for a short stop or an extended stay—this hotel will check all your boxes and leave you planning your return.
