What is the Purpose of Travel?

Everyone has different reasons for traveling. For some, it's about experiencing new cultures, meeting new people, or indulging in different cuisines. Others travel to witness historical landmarks or natural wonders, while many from younger generations seek that perfect Instagram shot.
For us, travel encompasses many motivations, and each trip offers unique experiences. Crystal is drawn to the allure of beaches and enjoys immersing herself in diverse cultures and religions around the world. On the other hand, I find myself gravitating towards historical sites and places of significance. If there's a battlefield or war memorial nearby, you can bet we'll make a stop. Regardless of our individual preferences, the common thread that binds our travels together is the people we encounter along the way.
Meeting new people and understanding their stories is paramount. They're not just props for social media posts; they're individuals with rich backgrounds and experiences. Admittedly, during a recent trip to northern Thailand, we took pictures with the women of the Karen Tribe, known for their distinctive long necks. However, the true fulfillment came from interacting with the children and learning about their history. This particular Karen tribe had fled from Myanmar/Burma as refugees, seeking safety from conflict. While we hoped their lives in northern Thailand were an improvement, we realized the complexity of their situation. As we wandered through the village, we shared treats with the children, witnessing the joy on their faces. Making even a small positive impact felt immensely rewarding. We observed their way of life, from cooking and sleeping arrangements to schooling and religious practices. It was a humbling experience that reminded us of the resilience and diversity of humanity.
Making meaningful connections isn't confined to exotic locales; it can happen anywhere, even at your local hotel or Airbnb. During our stays, we make an effort to engage with the staff, learning their names and stories. Whether it's the bellhop who greeted us warmly or the front desk attendant who facilitated our check-in, each encounter enriches our journey. And if these individuals enhance your stay, don't forget to acknowledge them in your reviews. They deserve recognition for their outstanding service.
In a world filled with good people, sometimes all it takes is slowing down and taking the time to connect. They're all around us, waiting to share their stories and enrich our lives through their experiences.

Meet Kalum at the Lighthouse Bay Restaurant in Galle, Sri Lanka. Kalum and his wife met while they were working in the Middle East. They came back home to fulfill their dream of opening a beachfront restaurant.
Meet Emily and Eyes from the Marriott Marquis Executive Lounge Bangkok. Not only do they provide exceptional service but they can perform the best rendition of "Staying Alive" that we have ever heard.

We met Jane while she was working at the Anantara Resort in Salalah, Oman. From the pictures, you can tell that her smile is contagious, and her personality is even better. Coincidentally, when we traveled to Nairobi, Kenya for a safari, she was back in her hometown. We were able to meet up with her and also met her son. It was an incredible evening, and we felt blessed to break bread and get to know these two wonderful individuals.
